Design Story | Y Caffi
A full concept that transformed a historic building into a welcoming destination, designed to be remembered as much as enjoyed.
Overview
A full concept project for a CIC community café within Basingwerk House, bringing together brand identity, interior design, and a series of considered, story-led details.
The aim was to create a space that honoured the building’s heritage while introducing a lighter, more contemporary atmosphere, resulting in a café that feels both rooted in its history and welcoming to a modern audience.
Concept
The design was shaped around the story of Basingwerk House, interpreted through an Arts & Crafts lens.
Drawing on the building’s original features, including parquet flooring and a central fireplace, the concept balances traditional craftsmanship with a softer, garden-inspired aesthetic. Influences from the Arts & Crafts movement informed the use of natural materials, gentle pattern, and a focus on detail, while subtle contemporary references helped keep the space fresh and accessible.
The result is a calm, welcoming environment that encourages people to pause, connect and spend time together.

Naming & Brand Identity
As part of the full concept, I developed the café name and visual identity to sit naturally alongside the interior.
The branding was designed to feel gentle, timeless, and approachable, reflecting both the heritage of the building and the café’s role as part of a CIC. Typography, colour, and supporting design elements were created to feel soft and characterful, allowing the identity to work seamlessly across print, digital, and the space itself.
Interior Design
The interior scheme was developed to create a space that felt warm, thoughtful, and easy to spend time in.
Original architectural features were retained and complemented with a softer palette, natural materials and carefully considered layers of texture. Every element was chosen to respect the character of Basingwerk House while creating a café that feels relaxed, welcoming and effortless to spend time in.
The overall result is a space that supports slow living, connection, and community while still feeling visually distinctive.
Bespoke Details & Storytelling Touchpoints
A key part of the project was ensuring that the smaller details felt just as considered as the wider space.
A bespoke counter was designed specifically for the café, tailored to the layout and day-to-day function of the space while acting as a central design feature.
Custom table numbers were also created as unique book-style boxes, each with its own individual name. These were designed not only as small moments of discovery, but as storytelling objects that help communicate the wider purpose of the CIC. Each one contains materials connected to Greenfield Valley, creating an opportunity for visitors to engage more deeply with the story behind the space.
Menus, tableware, signage, and finishing touches were all developed as part of the wider design language, helping every touchpoint feel connected and intentional.
Website & Digital Design
Alongside the physical space, I created the café’s digital presence to ensure the experience carried through online.
The website was designed to reflect the tone of the brand and interior, creating a cohesive visual identity across both physical and digital touchpoints. This gave the café a clear and recognisable presence online, helping communicate its offer, story, and atmosphere before customers even stepped through the door.
Marketing, Social Media & Launch Support
To support the launch and ongoing visibility of the café, I also worked across a wider set of marketing and promotional touchpoints.
This included social media design and management, photography, poster design, and setup of both TripAdvisor and Google Business Profile to help establish the café’s presence online and improve discoverability from launch.
By approaching these elements as part of the wider design process, the café was able to present a consistent and recognisable identity across the space itself, printed materials, social content, and local search platforms.

Creating the Experience
I don't see branding, interiors, websites and signage as separate disciplines. I see them as parts of one experience.
At Y Caffi, every decision was made to feel connected, from the first impression online to the moment someone walks through the door, orders a coffee or discovers the stories hidden inside the table numbers. When every touchpoint works together, people don't just remember the space; they remember how it made them feel.
